EXPERIENCING THE SPIRIT

                              THE SIGN OF HIS PRESENCE

In the Old Testament, when God chose to do His work through people, He sent His Spirit upon them. His presence in their lives enabled them to do His will and gave them confidence that He was with them in times of trouble. Consider some of the many people who experienced God's Spirit as a part of their divine call to service: Then I will come down and talk with you [Moses] there. I will take of the Spirit that is upon you and will put the same upon them. (Numbers 11:17) The LORD said to Moses: “Take Joshua the son of Nun with you, a man in whom is the Spirit. (Numbers 27:18) The Spirit of the LORD came upon him [Othniel], and he judged Israel.

(Judges 3:10) But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon. (Judges 6:34) Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah. (Judges 11:29) And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him [Samson]. (Judges 14:6) Then the Spirit of the LORD will come upon you [Saul], and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.
And let it be, when these signs come to you, that you do as the occasion demands; for God is with you. (1 Samuel 10:6—7) And the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. (1 Samuel 16:13) Now the Spirit of God came upon Azariah the son of Oded. (2 Chronicles 15:1) Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest.

(2 Chronicles 24:20) “Son of man, stand on your feet, and I will speak to you.” Then the Spirit entered me [Ezekiel] when He spoke to me. (Ezekiel 2:1-2) But truly I [Micah] am full of power by the Spirit of the LORD. (Micah 3:8) Over and over, God sent His Spirit upon people to enable them to fulfill His purposes. But it was more than just equipping them for service. The sending of the Spirit was at the same time a sign that His presence was there. When the Spirit of God was present, God was in their midst. And the Spirit enabled His chosen servants to recognize His activity and make the adjustments to obey the will of God.
