“He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.”
John 14:21
Many of us have water filter systems in our homes. We don’t drink the tap water. Instead, we take the water and run it through a filtering system to remove the impurities or toxins within. This is because we do not want the invisible bacteria, chemicals, and additives to harm our bodies. We want to drink that which is pure, undefiled, and healthy. In fact, many of us have gone so far as to put whole-house water filter systems in place, at no small expense. Or we place water filters on our showers as well. Pure water is a source of life to our bodies, while contaminated water is a source of disease and ailments. How we feel about our water, God feels about our hearts. He knows that the contaminants of sin and the pollutants of pride only harm a person’s life. He doesn’t want to see our hearts impure, not only because it offends Him, but also because He knows how it destroys us.
It destroys our relationships and thought processes, and even damages our dreams and destinies. Just as impurities cloud the water so you can no longer see the pristine nature of what it is, impurities also cloud our hearts, bubbling over to impact our spiritual vision as well. We can no longer see the pristine nature of who God is and what He has placed within us. Seeing God is important in life because it helps us see everything around us through a spiritual lens. God is Spirit. To know Him intimately is to know His heart. It is to know His perspective. It is to see life from His viewpoint. It is to live with a kingdom perspective. When you can view your life through the lens of the Holy Spirit, you don’t see people and problems like you used to. You see more than the limited physical realm in front of you. But when you are not connected to God, you will not be able to see Him and see through His spiritual eyes.
A lot of the misery we experience in life is due to being a slave to what we see. We assume that what we see is all there is to reality because we cannot see from God’s perspective. God can see so much more than we can. He can see what is behind, in front of, and all around. He is not bound by the physical limitations that we are. He can see all aspects of all things. When you live according to the kingdom value of a pure spiritual heart, you will grow to see more through God’s eyes. You gain an entrance into His eternal perspective. Seeing God means perceiving and sensing His reality. It opens up windows all around us through which we can gain clarity. Like the servant who was limited by physical eyesight when he looked out over the territory and only saw the approaching army, seeing God enables us to be like Elisha, who prayed that God would open his servant’s eyes. The servant was alarmed at the strength of the army circling the city. But when God opened his spiritual eyes, the servant saw God’s warrior angels lined up to protect and defend them (2 Kings 6:15–18).
How many battles have you gone out to fight that God had already planned to defend you from to begin with? How many battle scars have you needlessly obtained attempting to wage spiritual warfare with physical weapons? Seeing God because you live with this kingdom value of pureness of heart gives you the ability to see life spiritually. You can see His hand steering you away from danger in time. You can see His heart lovingly directing you toward your destiny. You can see the potential pitfalls on the path you’ve chosen so that you can avoid them rather than fall into them. Seeing God means you will see what you need in order to live your life to the fullest. It is something we all need.
Reaction:
What is your perspective of God? What ways can you help yourself see Him more fully? What would you like to have improved in your life through a closer relationship with God?
Prayer:
Jesus, help me to see my life and everything that takes place around me through spiritual eyes. Show me what is truly happening and not just what I can see on the surface. Give me eyes to see You, and in doing so, I will see spiritually. In Your name I pray, amen.
