"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. "
Psalm 46:1
GET A HISTORY
Read It: 1 Samuel 17:34-37
David saw something no one else around him saw. He saw God. David was committed to God in a way the others were not, so he got the power of God to bring down his giant. Not only did David see what no one else saw, but here is something very important. He also had experiences with God elsewhere to let him know that Goliath would be no trouble. Let me tell you what happens when most people run into a big problem. lem. They never learned to call on God in their little problems, so when the big one hits, they don't know how to call on Him and tap into His power. That's when the pastor's phone rings, because people go looking for someone spiritual to help them. The thing is to let God work where you are, so that when you get out there in the middle of a big problem, you have a history with God. That's what David had. So he gave Saul a little history lesson in the power of God. David proceeded to tell Saul a bedtime time story about a lion and a bear. Now this brother was bad. I could understand if David had said, "The lion came after me." But David said he went after the lion, talking about, "You aren't taking any lamb of mine! King of the jungle nothing."
Now what was the basis of David's power? It was his commitment to a God he knew was alive. See, if you know that your God is alive, you can go chasing after lions and bears if that's what He tells you to do. But you need to ask yourself how alive your God is to you today. Let me show you what I mean. Is your God just a cross you wear around your neck, a picture on your wall, or a Bible that's dusty on your bookshelf? Is your God the "beddiebye" bye" prayers you say at night? Is that how alive your God is? Or is your God the living reality of your life? Then you need to act like it. He is a powerful God. Think About It If you are asking God to make you look good, you may not get the power. But if you are telling God, "I want to make You look good," God says, "You need some power."
