THE EYES HAVE IT
Read It: Matthew 6:22-24 was taking a shower one day when I suddenly got soap in my eyes. I grabbed for the towel, but because I couldn't tell where I was, I cracked my head on the soap dish. Now I couldn't see, and I had a knot on my head. I also didn't know that the soap had slipped out of the dish. So as I groped for the door or something to grab hold of, my foot hit the soap. Suddenly I did my James Brown impression, slipping and sliding all over the place. Why? Because when my eyes went dark, I was in trouble. What does that have to do with stewardship? Well, Jesus cautions us to use our money with our eyes set on heaven and eternal values, not just on the earthly bottom line. Why? Because when your eyes go, the rest of you goes. The hands don't know where to touch if the eyes go. The feet don't know where to walk if the eyes go. If the eyes go, the rest of you is in darkness. ness. If you lose divine perspective, if gold replaces God as the trust and guide of your life, you are not only messed up financially, the rest of you goes too.
Jesus says that if you lose heaven's perspective on your earthly possessions, sessions, your stewardship will soon get off track, and you will wind up forfeiting God's joy and blessing. If all you can see is the earthly side of your resources, you'll get real guarded and protective of what you've got. In other words, you get a bad case of "mine" disease, and now no one can touch your stuff because it's yours. You can't use that house and that car God gave you to reach out to other people because it costs too much. Your time is too valuable to use up serving at your church. When the eyes go out, you lose focus. You can't see the eternal side of things quite as clearly because eternal things are not visible to the naked eye. Is it time for an eye exam? Ask the Holy Spirit to check your spiritual tual vision today. Think About It Unless your spiritual eyesight is 20/20, spiritual things are going to look fuzzy to you.
