Running Late

ISAIAH 49:23
Those who hopefully wait for Me will not be put to shame.

On one of my speaking trips to Tennessee, my plane was delayed. I got a little nervous because I had to fly to Memphis and then drive an hour to Jackson. I wasn’t dressed for the engagement. My clothes were in a garment bag, and I planned on driving to my hotel room and changing before I spoke. An hour later, we still hadn’t boarded. An hour and a half later, we still hadn’t boarded. We stayed on the runway for another 30 minutes before we took off. When we finally arrived in Memphis, a man was there to pick me up. I told him I was concerned that we wouldn’t have enough time to get to the meeting. He told me not to worry. They would wait. I told him I was also concerned about having enough time to change my clothes. Again, he told me not worry. He said he’d take me to his father’s house, and I could change there. After driving for an hour, he exited the highway and took me to his father’s house to change. I was rushing to change because I hate being late. But the man told me to take my time. He told me the people would wait. I was feeling frustrated and irritated, trying to rush and get ready.

As we left the house, I looked at the clock. We were indeed late for the engagement. The man saw me look at my watch and reminded me yet again not to worry because the people would wait. A few moments later, I walked into a glorious grand ballroom filled with thousands of people. As I entered, they stood up to applaud. They not only waited but even celebrated my arrival. You may feel like it’s taking too long for you to reach your destiny. You may look at your life and think too much time has passed for you to carry out those dreams God put in your heart so long ago. But don’t worry—don’t be concerned. If you will commit yourself to pursuing God now, your destiny will be there for you according to God’s perfect timing. God does not operate on our timetable. Waiting for His perfect timing will not disappoint you. In fact, it will be so wonderful that you may even stand up and applaud.

Father, Your timing is different from mine. When I feel like things are late, they are right on time for You. You have a perfect time for everything to take place. I pray that as I wait, I will not complain, but rather look forward to the glorious unfolding of Your perfect plan in my life.
