The Divine Driver
1 KINGS 19:12
After the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing.
When Jesus promises us, “He will guide you into all the truth” (John 16:13), that’s a way of saying that the Holy Spirit will be the steering wheel of your life. There are two ways to get to a destination. One way is to look at the map and figure it out yourself as you drive. Another way is to have someone drive you who already knows where they are going. If you have ever driven in an unfamiliar city or in a foreign land, you know that it is much easier to have someone drive you to your destination than for you to try to figure out the lane changes and sudden turns yourself. This is because they already know the way. Why should our lives be any different? God already knows where He wants to take us. He knows the roads we need to travel on in order to reach our destiny. And He has given us His Holy Spirit who lives within us—our personal GPS to guide us on our journey.
The path to your destiny may have twists and turns that won’t show up on a normal map, but the Holy Spirit even knows about those. As you seek to live your life on purpose, cultivate your relationship with the Spirit. Spend time in quiet every day listening for His voice. Discern how He speaks to you. It doesn’t have to be long. You just need enough time to quiet your own mind and the thousands of thoughts racing through your head so you can recognize the still, small voice of God’s Spirit. Try three minutes a day of silence for starters—not reciting items on a prayer list, but sitting in silence as you ask the Spirit to make His voice known to you. Over time you will begin to recognize His voice more clearly even in the midst of the busyness of life. And when you do, you will have tapped into the greatest Guide you could ever have on your journey to the fulfillment of your destiny. Yours is a still small voice, yet it carries with it all that I need to know. I want to be able to discern Your voice more clearly. I need to be able to discern Your voice more clearly. Help me to do that.
