Unfinished Creations

MATTHEW 5:16
Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

My wife, Lois, and I once visited a museum in Italy that housed many of Michelangelo’s unfinished works—piece after piece of incomplete statues. Some of them showed only an arm. Others might just have a foot or a shoulder. Some were almost finished, and others had been barely begun. As I walked through this museum looking at statue after statue of unfinished creations, I was reminded of heaven. Many of us are likely to get to heaven and stand before God one day without having fulfilled our purpose on earth. We will be like one of those unfinished statues I saw that day in Italy with just an arm showing, or just a leg, or only a shoulder.

All because God was never allowed to chisel out His complete design in us. Michelangelo’s completed works of art are displayed prominently in the most elite locations around the world. But those that were left undone are in a somewhat obscure museum in Italy. These pieces never reached their potential level of significance. Without significance, they remained unnamed and, for the most part, unseen. Never forget—you are significant! You matter. Your destiny matters. God has a plan for you that affects not only you, but so many others as well. Just as God blessed Abraham to be a blessing to the whole world, God’s plan for you is designed to have a broad influence. Maybe you don’t feel significant because you would prefer to be another gender, another height, or another race. But God purposely made you the gender, race, and height you are. God has arranged or allowed all the experiences in your life—the good, the bad, and the bitter—to prepare you to fulfill your destiny. You are the gender you are for your destiny.

You are the race you are for your destiny. You are the person you are for your destiny. You are significant. Don’t let the culture’s definition of significance keep you from being chiseled into the magnificent art that you are. Who knows what unfinished work might have received even more acclaim than Michelangelo’s David had it been completed? Who knows what statue remains imprisoned in a block of stone with its significance hidden from sight? Who knows what masterpiece God is creating in you?

Dear Savior, I am significant. I matter. You have created me with a purpose and an intention. I have a destiny to fulfill and a calling to live out. Thank You, God, for giving me all of this and so much more!
