Focus On The Ball
PSALM 100:3
Know that the LORD Himself is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
My wife and I have lived in the same house for more than 30 years. It’s a modest home in an older neighborhood. But one of the highlights of our location is that we are situated just a stone’s throw from a golf course. It’s a beautiful course stretching as far as the eye can see. Granted, I don’t play golf—I don’t have the time—but if I did, a walk through the course on the weekends would probably become a habit. The story is told of a man who wanted to learn to play golf, so he took a trip to the driving range. The little white ball was really doing a number on him, embarrassing him as he tried to master the skill of hitting it just where he wanted it to go.
Six times in a row the newcomer swung and missed the ball. He finally thought to himself, “This game provides a lot of exercise, but I don’t have any idea what to do with that white ball.” He failed at the sport because he failed to focus on the ball. Many of us are involved in endless activity, not hitting a thing, because we are not living with focus. We are busy and getting a lot of exercise moving through life, but our lives are not fulfilling the goals God has for us. God’s goals for our lives are specific. He has a specific location and destiny where He wants us to go. You have not been placed on this earth to randomly go through it without intention.
God is a God of intention. He is a God of plans. If you take just a moment to study nature and consider how everything is carefully tied together and perfectly timed, your awe of God and respect for Him will grow. Human beings are no different. The Lord has plans for each of us, and when they intersect, they fulfill His greater overarching plan. Keep your eye on the goal—God’s destiny for you—and you will accomplish more than you ever dreamed. Lord, You made me with a specific destination in mind for my life. Show me the way. Put me on the right path. Confirm my steps that are in alignment with Your will—in every way.
