God’s Warranty

ACTS 13:36
David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid among his fathers and underwent decay.

People often have warranties on the major products they own in their homes. A warranty simply guarantees that the manufacturer will stand behind their product. It’s a guarantee that if there’s a defect or a failure, the manufacturer will stand behind the product. But all warranties have limitations. The warranty is not designed to cover abuse by the owner. You can’t take your toaster, throw it against the wall, jump on it, or run it over, and then claim the product warranty. Warranties are offered under the assumption that the product will be used for its intended purpose.

God’s got a warranty on your life as long as you’re using it for His purposes and existing for His glory. A great biblical example of this is found in the life of King David. David was not a perfect man, but Scripture calls him a man after God’s own heart. In the book of Acts, we discover what a man after God’s own heart is all about: “David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid among his fathers” (Acts 13:36). David was about more than just church attendance, Bible reading and memorization, committee membership, and dancing in the street.

David, a man after God’s own heart, was a man after God’s purpose. David’s biblical epitaph tells us a lot simply by what it does not say. We do not read, “David, after he had become the head of the company,” or “David, after he had made so much money,” or “David, after he had won so many battles,” or “David, after he had risen in the social circles,” or “David, after he had purchased a lot of brand-name clothes…” No, instead it reads, “David, after he had served the purpose of God…” That’s what it means to be a man or woman after God’s own heart. David did what he had been put on earth to do. David knew that it wasn’t about him and that God’s blessings were tied to God’s purpose. He realized that his destiny was tied to God’s desires, and that the blessings he received flowed out of his destiny and were not independent of it.

God, grant me the wisdom to know my purpose and the self-control to pursue it rather than becoming distracted by other things vying for my attention. I know that You have my back and that You will cover me as I pursue the purpose You have for me. Thank You for that, Lord.
