The Fire of Life’s Passion
JEREMIAH 20:9
If I say, “I will not remember Him Or speak anymore in His name,” Then in my heart it becomes like a burning fire Shut up in my bones; And I am weary of holding it in, And I cannot endure it.
The space shuttle is an enormous flying machine created to carry out a unique mission. It has been designed to go somewhere. Yet because of gravity, the space shuttle can’t go anywhere by itself. It must be placed on a rocket and wheeled to the launch pad. Before it gets to the launch pad, gravity tells it, “You aren’t going anywhere. You are grounded.” And gravity is right. But when it is on the launch pad and a fire is lit beneath it, this earthbound, multi-ton vehicle is able to soar. Many of us are like a space shuttle sitting in a hangar—grounded—because of our fears. We are unable to live out our destiny because of things we have been told. We have poor self-esteem, and even though we desire to feel the surge of power beneath us, we sometimes think God is unable to create enough fire to lift this mess off the ground.
Yet if fire can lift the space shuttle all the way out of the earth’s atmosphere, fire can do the same for you too. Things move because of fire. Your passion is your fire. What is that thing, subject, interest, or vision that stirs you up inside when you think about it? Whatever that is, when you connect that passion with an eternal perspective, you’ll light a fire within. Keep in mind that your purpose and your passion have eternal value written in them if they are aligned with the destiny given to you by God. So the question you need to ask yourself is this: What am I passionate about that is connected to eternity? Scripture frequently says that God “stirred” the heart of a person He was calling to do something. How has God stirred your heart? What brings out your emotions? What breaks your heart or inspires and invigorates you? What do you do or even think about that makes you feel alive? If eternity is connected to it, that passion reveals your destiny. Pursue it. Chase it. Run after it. Go get it. Embrace it. Live it. Because without it, you will merely be existing—you won’t be fulfilling your destiny. If you’re wondering what your passion is, a great question to ask is this: What would you do if money, family, or time was not an issue? What would that be? Do you have a secret ambition? If it is tied to eternity, then that is your passion. And unless you pursue your passion, your emotional life will wither and die. Passion left unaddressed dies or at least remains dormant.
God, please reveal and confirm to me my passion that is connected with my eternal purpose. Light the fire within me that will propel me to do that which You have created me to do.
