The Master of the Piece

JEREMIAH 1:5
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you.

A number of characteristics make up a masterpiece. The first one is that a masterpiece is rare—like you. In order for something to be a masterpiece, it cannot exist all over the place. Another characteristic about a masterpiece is that a masterpiece is special. Again, like you. In fact, you are so special that God sent His own Son to live for you, die for you, and rise from the dead for you so you can be all that you were intended to be. A masterpiece is also valuable. If someone owns a masterpiece, they paid a large price for it. In fact, most masterpieces are carefully locked away in secure locations, such as museums and art galleries. That speaks volumes to the value of a masterpiece.

I hope you know that it also speaks volumes about you. A fourth characteristic of a masterpiece is that it is named by its creator. The artist or sculptor ascribes a name to his or her creation that reflects its meaning and purpose. You also have a name. It is your purpose. Your name encompasses the divine reason for your existence. God not only named you but also knows you. A masterpiece is associated with its creator. We listen to Handel’s Messiah or Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. We look at Michelangelo’s David or Monet’s Sunflowers. A masterpiece is rarely known simply by its own name but also by the one who made it—the master of the piece.

As a child of God, you are uniquely created by Him. He has made you and desires to be connected to you. He also wants others to know you in connection with Him. He wants those who see you to say, “I know her,” or “I know him”; “That’s God’s Sarah,” or “That’s God’s Matt,” or “That’s God’s __________________.” (Fill in your name—you are known.) As a masterpiece, you are rare, special, valuable, named, and known in connection with your Creator. Think of yourself that way. Embrace yourself that way. Honor yourself that way. In so doing, you are honoring the One who made you.

Gracious God, thank You for making me rare, special, valuable, named, and known. Thank You that in all these things I find my purpose and security. You are a great and loving God, and I praise You for being so intentional about creating me.
