RIGHTEOUS POLITICIANS
Exodus 18:21
Furthermore, you shall select out of all the people able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens.
Our nation needs Christians who will pursue God’s calling into the political arena. There are believers out there who should be running for office. Politics is only as messy as the people involved. The way to clean up politics is to put righteous people into office who possess a biblical view of civil government. This society needs people who feel God’s call on their lives to serve Him in politics. Then we will have leaders like the ones Jethro told Moses to choose: “able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain” (Exodus 18:21). These are righteous politicians, people who serve God and others with integrity. We need people at all levels of government who will take office with a kingdom perspective in view and a kingdom agenda to pursue. This can begin at the local level on the school board and in community organizations.
Then it will extend upward into the highest levels of our governing bodies. As the body of Christ, we need to take seriously our responsibilities to be the voice that speaks of God’s kingdom and His values. We cannot be armchair quarterbacks in politics and expect anything to improve. Rather, we must fulfill God’s calling to be both the salt and the light in our communities and in our nation and world. In that way, people will witness what a difference it makes when we align our laws and policies underneath God and His kingdom agenda.
REFLECTION: Do you know anyone who has integrity and passion who would be good in politics? How can you support wise and just politicians? What can you do about those who are unwise and unjust? Father, I ask that You will raise up people in our churches around the nation who will be called by You to serve You in the role of politics. Give them a heart to do this and to do it well.
