WORKING THROUGH TRANSFORMATION

Matthew 5:9
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

The use of force in protesting a government is always wrong. Some people believe force is justifiable to right a wrong, but the Bible only sanctions force when you are protecting yourself or others from violence. The use of force is to be defensive, in other words, not offensive. We are not to use or incite violence as a way of bringing about change. We should be known as peacemakers (Matthew 5:9). Unrighteous revolution is rebellion that seeks to forcibly change things from the top down. People always want to start with the president when it comes to protesting evil or getting unrighteous laws changed. But the kind of change we need rarely ever filters down from the White House. God works from the bottom up through transformation, which is why evangelism and discipleship, which seek to change the heart, must be at the center of the church’s agenda.

We must be careful not to drape the cross in the American flag, thus confusing the American dream and civil religion with the kingdom of God. But, rather, we must exemplify in every area of life what it means to represent the King and His values. Let love be our guiding force as we return it for any hatred or injustice given. Let love also propel us to action to assist those in need in ways that will then empower them to also assist themselves. As peace becomes the rule of our heart, we will witness God’s presence ever more evident in all that we do in His name.

REFLECTION: Why do evangelism and discipleship matter more to the church than political issues do? How do we confuse “the American dream and civil religion with the kingdom of God”? How can we be good citizens of our country without confusing that with our duties to God? Lord, let all that I do and say be coupled with a heart of love that it may make an impact on the lives of those around me. May I always represent You and Your love well.
